I watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer last night and was struck with the bullying culture towards the misfits. It all seemed to be centered around the idea that uniformity is the only way for anyone to get along.
This is exactly the same idea that Jeri is promoting. Haven’t we learned anything since 1964? It’s time to get over this concept of everyone “fitting in” and instead make space for a variety of people and friendship groups. The status-seeking that is promoted in every teen movie or TV show is an outdated social concept and we really need to do away with it. Welcome the diversity of human expression as contributing to a more varied and interesting environment, and watch how the world changes for the better.
