We have had a war powers authorization in place from the direct aftermath of 911. This is the war on terror authorization that was used to get us into Iraq and Afghanistan, and has been used by both administrations snice for action in Yemen, Libya, etc. etc. My understanding is that there is no expiration date on the thing. So, what is requested now is a specific authorization for a specific situation, with an end date / renewal requirement. For me, this is better. Having a permanent war on ‘terror’, as any administration chooses to interpret the term more or less commits us to ruling much of the world, if I take the thing to a logical conclusion.
