The long-time vinyl lovers don’t digitally remove hiss, crackles, and pops from their vinyl recordings, because they don’t sample, at a high or low sample rate. Everything is analog, front to back. With vinyl in good condition and clean, and a good musical chain from cartridge to speakers, those sorts of noises are not major problems. Of course, those long-time vinyl lovers are also often using equipment (front to back) that is acoustically (and financially) well beyond that $700 receiver and its accompaniment. People used to the quality of sound coming from mp3s played through earbuds or PC type powered speakers would likely be amazed at what comes out of an audiophile level system, but even the best vinyl playing out through those speakers would sound no better than the mp3…

I read the strip to imply that between Gene’s comments in panels 3 and 4, Janis made a comment along the lines of “well then, why don’t you go into the restaurant business?”, which would support Gus’s reported comment in panel 4 being a reference to a possible future event…

Johnson often has one of his characters responding to a statement that was apparently made by another character but which isn’t actually shown in the strip – the reader is expected to make the inference…

Urban legend – the word “nova” in Spanish means the same as “nova” in English. “No va” is a phrase and isn’t pronounced the same (the accent would be in a different place). In truth, the car was never renamed – it remained the Nova. See Snopes for details if you care.

I’m sorry – I though the whole point of the fight against providing contraceptive coverage was “religious freedom”, not profit…

  5. over 12 years ago on Candorville

Yeah, that was 60 years ago. Try getting a couple of decades more recent (i.e., something more relevant) and tell me which party has been the party of racial inequality…

Arrogant Bastard is from Stone Brewing (southern California), not Rogue (Oregon).

  7. about 13 years ago on Candorville

Of course it can. Every soldier, police officer, fireman, air traffic controller, etc., etc., etc., plus most teachers and many others are in government created jobs. Governments may not be able to create private sector jobs, but that is the role of the private sector and it hasn’t been doing that, in spite of non-existent interest rates, low taxes, and substantial corporate incomes…

  8. about 13 years ago on Candorville

No, they believe it because the massive amount of scientific evidence supporting it, now including a recent study by a former skeptic, funded by the Koch brothers, and printed in the Wall Street Journal…

  9. about 13 years ago on [Deleted]

Certainly not proven by anything we’ve seen here…

I think the basic point here may be getting missed. The reason that Melissa is saying that Roz “can’t be” gay is that several years ago it was established that Roz was very straight (she was very pleased that the limited female supply in the war zone made her very popular with the the men even though she acknowledged that she wasn’t a “10”, and she reported (eagerly!) that on 1 day she had multiple dates (with men)). So this seems more a show than real – perhaps to make her even more popular with the guys…
