I’ve been reading Doonesbury since about the time it was first syndicated. The thing that has amazed me over the years is hows Trudeau seems able to keep current with each generation. And Rush Limbaugh has a Presidential Medal of Freedom and he does not. Go ask Alice!

Today, Sunday, January 27, 2019, CBS Sunday Morning, celebrated their 40th anniversary with vignettes from those years. Charles Kuralt was the first host (Jane Paulette now) and set the mission statement they still pursue. He is in many of the bits. It reminded me immediately of this Arlo And Janis strip. It spoke to me and for me and was one of those moments that makes you think Jimmy Johnson, Arlo And Janis are part of your family.

As George Soros said, every regulation the market whines about was brought about by some disaster brought about by the lack of regulation of the so-called free market.

Speaking as a Canadian who supports government safety nets and government efforts to help up and out of generational poverty and ignorance, I think Arlo’s admonition to government is to avoid using law against things we don’t like rather as opposed to things that have to be illegal for the protection of society. Laws against marijuana, consensual sexual behaviour and laws forcing religious observation are examples. I think Arlo and Janis and Gene have consistently demonstrated celebration of diversity and compassion in their behaviour.

YES! A bit of dark, moist, fruitcake is a Christmas treat. I don’t know what triggered the hate fruitcake movement.

I love that Arlo and Janis have the hots for each other!

I love these guys as if they were real. We just had a wonderful wedding in our family. Our son married a wonderful girl with wondferful parents. Another son was best man and his wife’s band, of which he is a member, blew the crowd away. Their daughter, two and a half, was flower girl. The next day, our daughter’s boyfriend, in our province with her for the wedding, asked for our blessing to propose to her which he then did in Quebec city, in the next province over where his parents live. They live way out west so it is also gratifying that they both have strong roots here and nearby. We are as happy as Gene’s and Mary Lou’s parents.

A minister friend of mine said, “I see my job as to bring people together, not to keep them apart”. She also said, "There are two things I don’t do, ‘Who gives this woman,’ and ‘obey’ ". There are so many reasons I love this strip. Arlo asking Janis if she would like a second honeymoon and she replying “Is the first one over?” is one reason. I love that they still have the hots for each other after all these years. I never worried about Gene. I knew he was made of the right stuff when he stood by Mary Lou in her darkest times.

I think the point might be that Gene could not give his full concentration to remembering the message with the sight of Mary Lou’s derriere foremost in his mind. He is a healthy young man. And, yes, men do not relate to the nuances of fad dress codes just like we don’t get colours named after fruit or seasons.

As Johnny Carson said, for Arlo, the second happiest day of his life. For Gus, the happiest.
