Yes, LOOT-I-er is the traditional pronunciation. However, most luthiers I know pronounce it with a “th” sound. The American School of Lutherie pronounces it with a “th.” Merrian Webster and several other dictionaries recognize both pronunciations.
And consider this…https://youtu.be/wNbWp7VTcTg?t=216
Here’s a guy who makes his living as a luthier— a guy who respected enough in the field to restore a Torres— and he not only pronounces it “LOOTH-ee-ur,” he makes the same joke used above.
If you want to pick on Jef Mallett on this one, take him to task for confusing a National with a Dobro (a Dobro may have a metal resonator, but the body of the instrument is made of wood).

Barry Manilow did not write “You Deserve a Break Today,” but he did perform it on various early 70s McDonalds commercials. He did, however, co-write some notable jingles, including “Like a good neighbor” for State Farm, and “I am stuck on Band-Aid.” He also sang on a bunch more as a session performer (Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, KFC…).

The Marquette ore dock (owned by the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad) is still in operation. See http://www.travelmarquettemichigan.com/recreation/ore-boats/ , but 60 million tons would represent about 6 years of production. The largest freighters operating on the Great Lakes top out at somewhere between 60- and 80- thousand (not million) tons. A 60-million ton freighter would never make it through the Soo locks.
Even if we assume Caufield’s freighter to be a large, but reasonable 60 thousand tons, we still have a bit of a trick question. The post-Erie weight of the cargo on a Great Lakes ore freighter will be zero, because the ship gets unloaded in Cleveland (or perhaps Erie, PA). A 60-thousand ton freighter is too large (by some 250 feet) to pass through the Welland Canal.

Depending on where you are in Detroit, there may be a little bit of Canada to your south and southwest.

Actually, “Blowin’ in the Wind” was first released on Dylan’s “Free Wheelin’” album in May of ’63. The Beatles “Please Please Me” album was released in March of ’63.

In Michigan (where Frazz takes place), public schools are not allowed to start before Labor Day, but most high school football teams have already played their third game. Sure, there use to be practices and scrimages in the summer, but you didn’t have real games until school started.
Caufield is comes up with a cynical explanation, and Frazz gently chides him for it.

Eating mosquitos is a sufficient condition for being a friend. It is not a necessary condition.
Doesn’t the verb “fard” require an object?
