I think it’s something to do with living in the ‘system’: People appear (or are) almost too afraid to be in control of their own lives, so they take comfort in the fact we have a ‘system’ in which we can just be told what to do, and when, how and where to do it. They are portrayed in this strip rather drone-like; the big ‘office’ building is their sort-of control centre, if you will.
As an aside, I’m not convinced anybody would choose to work in a corporate building, faxing things all day, if they could do anything they wanted with their lives, or, indeed, if they revelled in the “freedoms” to do so!
