Urushiol, the chemical in poison ivy, is also in Cashews, Pistachios, and Mangos, in varying amounts. Cashews have enough that even “raw” ones have been steamed, to make them edible.
When working with Grandpa he showed me some Poison Ivy, so I would be aware of it when in the field. To reinforce the need to avoid it, he told a story about working on a land survey. Seems one of the men on the crew had an urgent call of nature, and dashed into the woods. Not having any TP he just grabbed several handfuls of leaves for cleaning up. A short time later he realized he may have made a mistake. Yes he had, and was paying dearly for it.
It happens I looked it up a while ago! The oils are actually made as a way to keep water in the leaves. The itching it causes humans is a complete accident! Poison oak and poison ivy, asked about it, were stunned. They had no idea they were causing any particular trouble and feel so embarrassed about it.

It’s like politicians … looks harmless, even after accidental contact. Then you suffer their infliction for the next four to six years.

I am not sure about poison oak, but poison ivy gets me very quickly even though I know what it looks like and try to avoid it.

Poison ivy and poison oak are not actually poisonous. Rather, most humans are simply allergic to them.

Fool me twice, shame on me
Is there an evolutionary advantage to learning from our mistakes?
