40 days and nights was just the rain. Noah was in the ark for more than a year. He was 600 years old when the flood hit (Genesis 7:6) but didn’t leave until the end of the 2nd month of his 601st year (Genesis 8:14). It took a lot longer for the earth to dry out than it did for it to get flooded (sounds like life!).
