A surgeon I know was talking about how in the 19th century, women who were assisted in childbirth by nurses did better than those assisted by doctors. The nurses washed their hands between patients. The doctors by and large did not. Doctors, you see, were gentlemen. Gentlemen, by definition, have clean hands.
