If we lived in the 1800s we wouldn’t have this conversation …

Not necessarily true, there were old people in the wild west. The data is skewed by diseases we now have a cure for and a higher rate of infant mortality.

There’s a difference between life span and life expectancy! The life expectancy (from birth) in the mid 19th Century in the US was around 40, but people weren’t dropping dead from old age at 40! If you survived infancy and early childhood (and many did not survive), you had a pretty decent chance of living to a good old age. John Adams lived to age 90, Thomas Jefferson to 83, and Ben Franklin to 84. Even Mad King George III was 81 when he died, as was his granddaughter Victoria. Eliza Hamilton survived Alexander by 50 years – she died in 1854 at age 97!
