I think most dogs have an instinct to eat fast, because in their natural setting (packs), they have to eat quickly before someone else gets all the food.
Our St Bernard could take that solid lump of canned dog food out of the air before it hit the bowl. My younger sister and brother once decided it would be a brilliant idea to see how many he’d eat before losing interest. I believe it was around six. I was not amused with a sick dog and all that expensive Alpo being wasted.
When my avatar was little she would woof her food down and then pretty much puke out whole Kibbles. I got her one of the slow bowls with all the grooves. At first she just sat there looking at it and then after a bit decided she better try to get that food. After a few months she would eat out of a regular Bowl nice and slowly. Actually taking time to chew.
105 pound German shepherd. 5 cups of Purina Pro Plan Large Breed kibble. One week average time to empty bowl: 37 seconds. The dog then roams the house claiming he has not been fed, offering as proof the empty bowl.
That’s what dogs do Red, scarf it down and look up for more; when none comes, they drink and go lay down in a huff. Then we tell me let’s go outside and they do. But don’t let them catch you eating….Alex was outside, and got up on the bench and caught up having a cookie…well he made a bee line for the door, barked, came in and gave us the look “I need to smell your mouths” so we opened and boy we got a dirt look. So we got him a doggy treat but he kept looking at the cookies and we said no not those, you can’t have them. Off in a huff he went.

Besides, have you actually tried these kibbles? If you had, you’d gobble them down too.

Actually, the faster Rover eats, the longer the time between meals, assuming he gets fed the same time each day.

I’m starting to feel sorry Rover and his very boring, dry food! Red, give our buddy more variety! (Love you guys, anyway) :)

I’ve seen those “maze” food dishes that are supposed to slow dogs down. Do they work?

Special dog dishes are available with deep grooves in the bottom. It slows their eating, but why bother?

I don’t usually admit that I think like a dog, but…I’m totally with Rover on his last comment!
