Was about Red’s age, trick-or-treating with my two younger sisters, my best friend and his younger sister. There was a house on the next block, all peeling paint, overgrown, dirty windows. We kids thought it was haunted. The porch light was on. “I’m not going there!” “We have to, the porch light is on.” After some debate, we all went and knocked. An old woman dressed as a witch answered. “Children!” she exclaimed in the voice you’d imagine. “Come in!” She ushered us onto the dark enclosed porch, that looked like you’d expect where some others were waiting on a bench, so we joined them. Two more groups came. She rubbed her hands together and cackled. Then she pushed back a pocket door I had not noticed in the dark to reveal — A beautiful old fashion parlor set up with the biggest Halloween party you’ve ever seen! We played games, enjoyed treats, then she sent each of off with a little sack of goodies, and began gathering another group of victims. Never saw her, or any light on in the house again.

And Red has a full moon, second one in October. There won’t be two full moons in October until 2039.

My favorite 9-year-old declared that he’s done with trick-or-treating. “I don’t want to be trick-or-treating when I’m in double digits!”
