richard's poor almanack ... by richard thompson harry potter & the end of civilization things fall apart after the seventh book comes out. kids start losing interest in all non-harry potter books. charlotte's web kid: the pig can't fly or do magic? blegh. so do adults. woman: "pride & prejudice" would be better if it had moaning myrtle in it. man: and how. writers feel their creative powers start to decline. writer 1: i can't think of anything worth writing about. rowling was the peak; we are bul a long down-hill slide into mediocrity & decadence. writer 2: besides, she utter-ly depleted the world's supply of adverbs. soon, civilization is gribbed by a narrative malaise, a word-weariness. language itself begins to fade. writer 1: guh. um huh? fimi yo wiwi. writer 2: muh? so when the big asteroid hits, no-body knows what to call it. guy 1: mung! ub! ub! buh-boom! guy 2: whu?
