richard's poor almanac - by richard thompson cicadaville bug 1: now? can we go up now? brood bug 2: no! not for another month! bug 3: you know what i'm gettin' sick of down here? bug 4: what? bug 5: hey, where've you been? bug 3: i'm sick of those ants & their damn hive mind. bug 4: yeah! ask an ant a simple question & he's like, "i don't know, i gotta go check with everybody." bug 6: i went up to look around. bug 5: anything going on? bug 1: how about now? bug 3: and earth-worms! you ever dish the dirt with one of them? bug 4: yeah! everything goes in one end and out the other. bug 5: bush is running for president against a droney guy from massachusetts oop: no not yet. bug 1: but i wanna meet chicks! brood bug 3: well, let's go pack. i bought a bikini that's perfect for molting. bug 4: you've got the figure for it. bug 5: jeez, they must be on a 16-year cycle. bug 6: and the noise they're making will drive you crazy.

After 17 years, cicadas emerge in my part of the world, are gathered up, have their wings and legs torn off, and are fried and eaten. Jeez, wonder why their numbers are a fraction of what they used to be?
