Ripley's Believe It or Not! Believe It or Not! English poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a 6,000-word poem at the age of 12! "Mates For Life" The male Huia bird of New Zealand uses its short beak to pry bark from trees while the female's long curved beak is used to extract larvae - if one of the pair dies, the other starves to death! Barbara Rickard of West Sussex, England, ran a mile in 8 minutes, 1480 seconds wearing Wellington boots filled with custard!
They shouldn’t be using the present tense in reference to the huia. As a result of anthropogenic threats, such as habitat destruction, hunting, and introduced species, this unique bird became extinct in 1907. I read about this in The Doomsday Book of Animals: An illustrated account of the fascinating creatures which the world will never see again (©1981) by David Day.
