Charles Babbage (1791-1871) invented the world's first automatic calculator in 1821 and later designed the world's first general purpose computer- a steam powered machine consisting of 50,000 components and run by punchcards! To call attention to an exhibition of zircon crystal estimated to be 4.4 billion years old, the University of Wisconsin-Madison held a rock concert. State government came to a standstill in 1872 when two different legislatures in Louisiana elected to governors- who feuded constantly!
