Grant’s wife still own slaves and held them all through the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclaimation did not apply to her. She only freed them when she had to at the war’s end.

Grant must have had a heck of a P.R. agent. This is the first time I’ve heard about his family having slaves, and I’ve been reading Civil War history stuff for years!
