The Alutiiq people of Alaska once hunted with poison made from Larkspur leaf monkshood flowers- a dose of which is powerful enough to paralyze a 40 ton humpback whale! Fenway Park in Boston, Mass., USA, has been the continuous home of the Boston Red Sox of Maj. League baseball since the stadium was built in 1912 a mechanized doll built around 1800 named Maillardet's Automation- can write poems and draw pictures, which are all encoded into an elaborate series of metal cams that serve as the machine's memory!

That automaton spooks the hell outta me. A robot at that moment in time? Creepy.
The flower poison is creepier.

They had it on History Channel. It is one of several. And it is really creepy looking.

It is a very limited repertoire, but still quite a feat.

The automaton is similar to the one depicted in the recent film “Hugo” built by Georges Melies.

So wait, the automaton from the movie Hugo was based on an actual machine?!

I saw the automaton on a show called “Mysteries At the Museum”, which told its story. It was thought for a long time to have been destroyed in the fire that reduced Barnum’s museum to ashes back in the 1860s. Then it suddenly turned up in a package sent anonymously to its current home, which is the Smithsonian, IIRC. For something built in the 1830s, it is quite a remarkable and impressive device.
