Ripley's Believe It or Not! James Monroe, elected U.S. president in 1820, is the only president of the United States, apart from George Washington, to have been elected unopposed. Heroin. Hydrochior. Heroin was originally a brand name, trademarked by drug company Bayer in 1898, and sold as cough medicine. Fortune cookies were invented in California, not China!
I knew that Washington had been unopposed, but I am surprised to find that out about Monroe. You learn something new every day. One does wonder why Monroe did not face an opponent; surely the opposition party would have found someone to run against him, especially since James Monroe had nothing like Washington’s stature in America.
