Ripley's Believe It or Not! *From the Patent Drawing* The self-saluting hat was invented by J.C. Boyle of Washington in 1896 - it would automatically lift the hat from the wearer's head. High-heeled shoes, known as "chopines," some 18-inches high, were worn in 16th century Venice by women as a sign of status and to help keep their feet dry in the damp city. The hyrax, a 5-lb rodentlike creature from Africa, is the closest living relative of the elephant!
