The sailor Alexander Selkirk, marooned for 4 years alone on a desert island and the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe, had actually asked to be put ashore because his ship was unseaworthy- it later sank off the coast of Columbia. Research has shown that humans may make more rational decisions in the dark, as bright light can increase emotions.
