In London in 1896, Bridget Driscoll became the first pedestrian to die in an auto accident when she was struck by a car from the Anglo-French Motor Carriage Company, traveling at no more than 5 MPH. The SS Bessemer, built by English industrialist Henry Bessemer in 1875, was a ship designed to cure seasickness. It featured a pivoting deck that stayed flat as the ship rolled, but was impossible to steer and crashed into a French pier on its maiden voyage.
