Those Canadians should have realized two facts: No building has a thirteenth floor, and in France, there are no street addresses with the number thirteen.
Many countries have such rules as to avoid the national “unlucky” numbers, like the 13 in some western countries or the 4 in China and Japan (and there are others). Especially in hospitals these numbers are often avoided as room numbers. As for buildings: I’m working in a 30-storey-building and it definitely has a thirteenth floor. But I hear that in the USA this is avoided.
People are really funny about superstitions. I worked in a hospital in the medical records department. Way back then, we had little tabs that we used to mark places in the chart where the doctor needed to sign. They were of various colors, but we didn’t sort things out by color; any tab would do. One of the doctors angrily told us to stop using any black tabs, because they made his patients die!

Hey, I hope that didn’t come out of the $1,000,000 I’m getting for helping him get the money out of the country!

As opposed to the courthouse I visited, where I heard, “Juror number 666, please take seat 13.”
