Since veloci means fast (or speedy) and raptor means bird of prey, where does the thief come in? Is it assumed birds of prey are thieves?

I get how “Veloci” can mean speed, but I’m fairly certain that “raptor” means “bird of prey.” Granted I don’t really know latin and it can mean more than one thing (like how the “homo” in homosapien means “man” when “homo” usually means “same”)

This is somewhat inaccurate about Mrs. Polk. She banned hard liquor, but did serve a wide variety of wines. I gather the bans were because of her religious values.

In those days entertainment included things like singing, charades, word games, and talk. I’m sure there were other things, but that’s what I know off of the top of my head.

Side note: her father saw to it that she received an excellent education, which was unusual for those days. In fact, she first met Polk when they were going to school. As adults she was reintroduced to him by Pres. Jackson.
