Childhood Thanksgivings
At five AM my mother startsTo roast the turkey brownShe wonders as she cooksIf there’s enough to go around
The china that’s kept out of reachIs brought out for the dayWhile waiting in my Sunday bestI’m careful at my play
The extra leaf is added onThe tablecloth is spreadThe forks on left, and spoons on rightIs what my mother said
The relatives start to arriveEach with a little treatAnd finally, at half past 3We all will take a seat
Adults sit at the table largeUs small ones have our ownWe say we can not wait untilWe all are also grown
The grown-ups’ wine, kids’ ginger-aleIs poured and passed aboutThe turkey and the fixingsHave all been taken out
Everything looks wonderfulI’m thinking with a sighWe bow our heads and give our thanksLike Thanksgivings gone by
And as I sit and think a bitOf Thanksgivings beforeI’m thankful for those gathered hereAnd thankful for much more
