Meemaw: The dinghy swayed and floated on the gentle waves. The storm had passed...soon it would be morning. The Earl of Penguins had traveled farther than any flightless bird...using his flippers and his courage. Guardian: She's good! I'm getting a little sleepy myself!
My mother used to buy us a Little Golden Book from the grocery store every two or three weeks. “The Pokey Little Puppy,” “Saggy Baggy Elephant”, and “Pantaloon” were three of my favorites. I have them still on the shelf, along with Cherry Ames. . .haven’t read “The Happy Hollisters;” I’ll have to get them from the library. I did just discover the “Swallows and Amazons” series—cute adventure series for kids 7-10 or so, written in the 1940s or ’50s. . .
P.S. Not even my mother’s reading could get me through “War and Peace;” the closest I’ve come is the Cliff Notes. . .;)
