The separation of church and state was to protect the church from being interfered with by the state. It was not designed to protect the state from being influenced by the church, as that would interfere with freedom of religion, another constitutional right. People get this backwards all the time.
The first fatal blow to the separation of Church and State came back in the Eisenhower Administration when the words “Under God” were inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance.
