Like so much of the Christian mythology, the idea of masturbation being inherently “evil” has nothing to do with it being evil, or even bad, and everything to do with intimidation and control of the individual – which is the basic purpose of nearly every religion. Growing up, I was taught that “self-abuse” was inherently evil, as was homosexuality, but literally NO ONE could adequately explain WHY without lapsing into mystical religious mumbo-jumbo!
Needless to say, my rationalization was to just not tell anyone that I did it. If you don’t get caught then you aren’t guilty – right?
This philosophy obviously led me to become a Republican in my early adulthood, but that’s a whole ’nother story.
