From the one video I watched, and article, don’t know how Canadian law would deal with the officers, but, having been an “incident commander” in riot control, and giving training, military and civilian, these guys did just about everything WRONG in the situation. Starting of course with the fact you NEVER bottle people up, without giving them a clear and EASY route of “departure” or “escape”. This same kind of idiocy played out more recently in New York, and elsewhere with “controlling” the Occupy movement. The supervisors in New York, and the campus “rental cop” with the pepper spray in Davis, should have been arrested themselves for assault.
I’ve been a “cop”, have relatives who still are, and feel ALL police departments should be trained, controlled, and treat citizens with respect, and vice-versa. Neither citizens, NOR OFFICERS should be at risk of life or limb in any “confrontation”. Those who START a “risk situation” on either side, should be punished appropriately, under the law, for the violation.
AS we’ve gotten more violent as a society, likewise, too many police agencies have “jumped the gun”, literally on bringing violence, instead of reason, into the situations. Good cops are the ones who join to serve. “Bad cops” are the ones who join to “push people around”. Too often “conservative” thought, like in Berkeley, or Baghdad, tends toward violent response, not, reason. It means society needs to “change”, not just protestors, or police.
