There are two versions of messy desks—high rise slums and urban sprawl. Cosmos’s is the former. The latter involves putting little piles of stuff all over your desk and any empty space that can be found. But at least those piles aren’t high enough to fall over.
The movie “First Monday in October,” Walter Matthau’s desk was covered in what looked like a 2 ft+ pile of paper. Whenever he needed a document he would reach into the pile and pull it out. Never got the wrong document the whole movie. =)
Those are Jeff MacNelly’s words exactly! He did not believe in filing stuff in drawers because he thought he would never be able to find it, once it diappeared into the gaping maw of a file cabinet. So he had very tall stacks that were chronological on his huge partner’s desk . If somebody asked him for a drawing or document, he would study the pile and then pluck the sought after item and puff on his Maduro and laugh. It was an archeological dig …..a riot of art, literature and color but he knew where everything was. Jeff and Cosmo always had a lot to giggle about. Thanks for being fans of Shoe.Susie MacNelly aka Roz

One time Cosmo told Shoe that his papers were “organic insulation for the winter”, so he does have a semi-use for the heap.

Thank you Roz, ;-D. I read Shoe everyday, but I don’t comment often. I love it though, been reading for years! Many years, now, sigh! :-)
