Don’t get me started on non-metric measures. Why are some Imperial measures different from US measures? Why do Americans use cups as a measure? Give me metric any day – a litre is a litre in every country (apart from the US where it is misspelt).
As an American who has lived and worked overseas for many years I find it amusing that only two countries in the world, USA and Liberia in Africa, don’t use metric! It is so much easier to use than USA measurements.
@Leo Autodidact The problem is imperial and US pints and gallons are not the same. Even the fluid ounce is different. The English system is imperial not the US version.Metric is more consistent. BTW, a “gramme” was originally defined as a weight.
It does give me a lot of pleasure deliberately misunderstanding Americans when they use their so-called units and confusing them with my replies. That’s one form of trolling I have no apologies about. Hey, Americans, when over 99% of the world uses one system, either switch to it or be made fun of. Your choice.
If there’s an area in which I’m a liberal, it’s this. I believe the only reason the U.S. hasn’t converted to S.I. is to keep the public stupid. Big business isn’t going to do any favors for anybody because more money can be made this way.
“Sorry, you just didn’t measure up”..I think the imperial system is more accurate and easier to use than metric when it comes to temperature. It’s surprising that seconds, minutes, and hours weren’t changed. Give them time. 28 day months work out better and we could have an Old Year’s Day off.
I remember in junior high school science class (in the late 70s), we were warned that soon the whole country would be converting to the metric system and we better better get use to it. Weathermen use to give the temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit, measuring cups had both units of measurements and sodas were sold in liters. Well flash forward 40 + years and guess what. Seems we stubborn Americans never got use to the metric system. I think if this country really wanted to commit to change, they should have thrown out the archaic English units of measurements altogether and just converted everything to metric.
ypoons, i remember that. they were to start teaching metric in the 1st grade then as that grade advanced, they’d continue with them as they went into 2nd & start the new 1st graders in metric. within 12 years all the kids would know metric. but the adults were so bent on the imperial system the plan was dead in the water.

The metric system is ⅓ phony. Time is still measured in values of 60, 24, 28(29)/30/31, 365(366). Stupid system.
