My high school algebra teacher (Brother Augustine) would drink during the football games. He was a great teacher.

I’m a first-grade teacher. Because I have to talk all day, I keep a water bottle with me. My bottle is metal and not see-through. I usually fill it with lemonade or iced tea, but any time the kids ask me what I’m drinking, I tell them it’s water so they don’t get curious and ask for a taste.

During an activity one day, I’m checking on a few of my students when I hear a boy behind me shout:

Boy: “THIS ISN’T WATER!”

I turn around, and the boy is standing by my desk, drinking from my water bottle.

Me: “[Boy]! Put down my water bottle!”

Boy: “It’s not water! What is it, Miss [My Name]?”

Me: “It’s lemonade. But a better question is, why are you drinking it? You know better than to take other people’s food or drinks. It’s bad manners.”

Boy: “I was curious. It’s really good!”

Kids — gotta love them. I did give the boy a short time-out for breaking the rules and taking something that wasn’t his, and I quietly mentioned the incident to his dad when he picked the boy up after school, but ultimately, this is just one of those things that teachers learn to deal with. All I could really do was wash my bottle that night and start leaving it on a higher shelf that none of the kids can reach.

I’ll be so glad when the powers that be impose their limits on alcohol consumption.

I walked into my son’s English Language classroom and told the teacher that he was setting a bad example.

‘How?’ he asked.

I said, ‘At the bottom of my son’s homework you put ‘A for effort’ when clearly it starts with an E.’

Teacher: tomorrow we will be learning about waste management,

it’s going to be a rubbish lesson.

My teachers in the 60´s never (as far as we know) drank, but when I worked in a secondary school in the 90´s it was hard to see why they didn´t!

Not necessarily, it depends on the students.

Drink before you go to work. It makes more sense.

It’s not the kids that do it; it’s the administration.

It may only be a coincidence, but this week there have been two articles in the news about teachers being arrested for drinking alcohol in classrooms. One had a blood alcohol level that was 3 times higher than the level allowed for driving. Wonder how effective their teaching was?

Very funny, as a former teacher, if only…

I guess kids need bad examples, too. That way they don’t have to make all the mistakes personally.

I think that teacher is probably on to something there.

There was just a news article on the web about a teacher fired on the first day of school for showing up drunk.

Saw where an Oklahoma teacher was arrested for being drunk on her first day back to school.

I wonder how many of his students are doing the same to get through the day?

Saw a news story last week about a teacher getting arrested for drinking in the classroom.

Maybe. But definitely a bad bus driver.

When I was in HS, one of my classmates had one of those canes with the 5 glass vials hidden inside it. He brought it to school every day, filled with Vodka.

He drank one vial before each class.
