The United States is currently experiencing 11.5 times the daily infection rate as the EU. There is a reason for this.
Europeans, traditionally, lived under Emperors, Tsars, Kaisers and Kings. They are used to listening to authority figures. Their authority figures are telling them to stay at home and wear a mask and maintain social distancing.
Americans like to think that we are individuals. It’s mostly a myth. We believe authority figures too, whether they be politicians, priests or ministers or imams or even sports figures (why else do advertising companies pay them big bucks to use their names). To a certain extent, one must heed expert advice since no one can fact check every datum. However, for serious issues, one should choose which experts to trust.
Our chief authority figure is telling us that this is a hoax and has minimized the seriousness of the pandemic at every opportunity. His he acts in a manner contrary to what people should do to combat the disease. Rule number one in leadership is to exhibit the behavior that you want your followers to emulate.
Most Americans do the right thing. But most isn’t enough. It only takes a small population of ignorant or uncaring people to keep the pandemic going indefinitely. As long as there are those who willingly do the wrong thing, all of us will be held captive in our houses.

The world can be inviting, not unlike the mythical Sirens who lured sailors to their deaths.

I do not want “the world” to “reopen”, if that is going to put my life in significantly greater danger.
I personally would rather be patient than dead… or damaged for the rest of a not-so-brief life.
(Yep, many who “recover” do not recover completely.)

This was in the L.A. Times yesterday. The rabbit hole cartoon seen here yesterday is in today’s paper.
