My wife and I inherited a geriatric dog from a friend of ours who died. The dog was 14 years old when we got her. We had her for two years. She was a spry thing for her age, but even I could outrun her at my age.
The squirrels knew this and took advantage. They got complacent about coming into our yard. They got even more complacent in the several months “between dogs.”
We now have a 4-year-old golden retriever who think that squirrels make good retrieving dummies. They were a bit surprised the first time they encountered him. They now stay up on the fence.

Hmm…is the fellow’s eyes bugging out because of the huge alien squirrel or that his dog suddenly spoke to him?

On that planet, the giant squirrels bark at the dogs and humans who attempt to run across the road without getting hit and climb trees.

Okay, squirrels. Grab my neighbor’s dogs next. Two little ankle biters who bark 24/7. You can’t miss them

Uh, if you could speak, why didn’t you just say something?

So THAT’S why they are called The Greys. Good thing they weren’t The Reds. Vicious little critters if they think you’ve hidden a treat from them.
