Tropical islands are over rated.
26 years ago I spent a week in the Hawiian Islands.and it was the most expensive and lest enjoyable vacation I have ever taken:
I used a travel agent to book the flight and living arrangements. I paid for a private bungalo, however I stayed in a studio apartment that had someone elses stuff in it, and roaches.
My shopping experiences were horrible at a clothing, grocery and restaurants. I paid 3 times as much for everything I purchased there (comparing it to prices in California). I had to wait in long lines everywhere!
I booked a catamaran trip to another island to snorkel and a Luau. It was very expensive, however everything was expensive…… but i did not expect that we would not sail the catamaran, we motored to the other island similar to riding a barge, because they said they could not sail.
I was taken to a bay where the snorkeling was known as ‘the best in the world’, I was not able to snorkel because the waves were breaking about 5 ft high, 3 ft from the shore. I was surprised no one else was snorkeling, why would they pay so much to motor to another island and eat chicken at a luau? Anyway, I was the only one out of 15 passengers who tried to snorkel. I did not see any waves break until I was about to start snorkeling…. at which time I hurried back to shore, but I was not quick enough because I was thrown into the surf twice before I was able to get out of the water. I did not snorkel that day or any day. ( I tried to walk in the surf near the room I stayed in and had the same problem with the 5 ft waves suddenly throwing me into the surf).
After experiencing trips both to Mexico and the Hawiian islands……….I only recommend vacationing in Mexico… the people, the shopping, the food, entertainment, and water activities were so much more affordable and enjoyable.
