In fact, there’s a pretty fair amount of careful analysis that says he DID paint what he saw, if you include artistic license for some of the details.

If I met someone who said he painted what he saw, I’d show him my house.

‘Starry Night’, taking into the consideration, that there was virtually no light and smog contamination of the views of the stars

was much clearer in those days of candle and gas-lit night-lighting.
