A trucker friend of mine once opined, “They’s only two seasons in Indiana: Winter Season and Construction Season.” After decades of deterioration here in hyper-GOP, hyper-parsimonious Indiana, there are MANY road projects underway; so many that the detours have detours. In one case on Ind. 42 (a paved two lane state highway), the orange signs say, “Lane Restrictions Ahead”; but the crews actually demolished a bridge, removing both lanes. The only detour, of about 10 miles, requires that all vehicles transfer to county roads, most of which are narrow gravel roads. To add to the aggravation, the SOP seems to be to start one project, then let it languish for a year or two, while starting other projects, before completing the first one. Some parts of I-70 are so rough that trucks are directed into the left lane to prevent them from further pulverizing the right lane.
