I searched for a specific Edward Hopper painting but did not find one that matches. Apparently the joke is a reference to all of his paintings that peer thru windows as a symbol of alienation. A great artist, but sad, so sad.
I do appreciate Mr. Deering giving us credit for being more knowledgeable than we really are, (I had to refresh my forgotten art history on Hopper).Edward Hopper was an artist who portrayed everyday America in plain, honest but somewhat muted or understated terms. So ALL of his paintings would be eerily familiar to to the viewer.

So, life imitating art, or art imitating life…
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
