When you are up to your ass in allegories, it’s easy to forget that your initial objective was to get credit for Freshman Lit.

Looks like quite a massive allegory.

Kids, thank Mr Bolling, he just saved you several hours of slogging through the novel. (Just kidding, it’s a cracking story and you should READ IT! (although Peter Brook’s film was great))

When we had this in school, they showed us the movie (1963 version, not 1990 version). The image of the dead pilot hanging in the trees gave me nightmares.

I was also SEVERELY traumatized by the dead boy in the tree in “Walkabout”: I don’t know why on earth my parents thought that was an appropriate movie to bring a 6-year-old to, but this was long before every movie review listed all the content warnings. I wasn’t even old enough to appreciate a naked Jenny Agutter…

We read it in 7th grade English. Teach asked what we thought it was about; in all the depth of my 12-year-old intellect, I said “Man’s inhumanity to man”.

She replied “No; it’s about man’s kindness to man.”

54 years later, I’m still trying to find whatever it was she was smoking……….
