As a retired soccer referee and referee instructor, I believe officiating is an anonymous job. At the end of the day, you want the fans talking about how great a game it was, not how lousy the _______(fill in the blank) refs or umpires were. A truly good referee manages the flow of the game, the safety of the players, and the enforcement of the rules in such a way that he/she is unremarked.
In a perfect world the referee does their job efficiently, fairly, and without calling undue attention to themselves… you will notice I said in a perfect world.

In a close game the loser’s fans always complain about the officiating. Not the coachers and players because of NFL penalties for such.

I thought refs and umps were sacrificial goats.
