It;s probably those people trying to dig their way out.

Tarzan trapped in a pit!? Well, one supposes there is some poetic justice in that…

I thought that only Tarzan dug pits for his enemies, now he knows what they go through on the way down to their doom.

Tarzan has a patent on all pits and holes used as traps. This guy better have a license.
