Universities love PhD students because they're a source of cheap, brilliant and disposable labor. What's in it for the students? Debt, underemployment, and a salary 3% higher than if they hadn't bothered. Man: I'm a substitute part-time temp! My job is to convince my students to go for PhDs. Woman: Sweet gig! How can I get one? Man: You need a second PhD.
