It is with a sad heart that I share the news that my beloved Dexter died tonight, just under 3 hours ago. He was the last of the 3 kittens I got from my sister, Mary, back in 2006. Dexter’s brother, Marlow, died in February last year and his other brother, Ike, died very suddenly in February 2017. This is the trouble when your cats are close to the same age. When they get older, sometimes, you have to face death too many times in too short a time span. I knew Saturday morning that Dexter was in his final hours. Sadly, I’ve seen death so many times, I can often sense it when it’s coming. Dexter was no exception. Dexter and I had our daily routine. Every morning, the first thing when I got up, Dexter would look at me with those beautiful eyes of his and he’d tell me it was time for his breakfast. He wasn’t eating the dry cat food that I keep out all the time, so I fed him canned food twice a day. If I overslept a little, he would be quite demanding, letting me know his breakfast was late and he was on the verge of starving to death. Then at night, the second I’d get home from work, he would again be demanding that I feed him immediately. “Take off your coat and shoes AFTER you feed me!” he seemed to say. Well, on Friday, everything was normal. He had his usual healthy appetite and he ate all his food. But Saturday morning, he didn’t come looking for his breakfast. I found him on the living room floor, looking weak and lethargic. I petted him and his feet and his body felt cold. I had a bad feeling he would not live through the day. I held him on my lap as long as I could before I had to leave for work. I didn’t really want to go to work because I didn’t want him to die while I was gone. But I knew he could still linger all day, so I went to work. But I decided I was going to leave two hours early so maybe I’d get home before he passed on.
I spent 2 1/2 hours this morning wrapping Craig’s cherry trees with shade cloth against our expected very late freeze predicted over the next 2 nights. Up and down and moving the heavy ladder dozens of times. A 20 minute job with help but I am too stubborn to ask. The decades old peach plum and apricot trees are loaded with fruit, we’ll see what happens, they are too big to protect. . Oh and by the way, gusts up to 70 mph are also forecast.
Apparently, outdoor furniture serves the same function as indoor furniture to a cat. That makes sense. (To a cat, anyway.) On another note, saw seven robins, five chickadees, two geese, and three juncos while out walking today.

My cats love to sharpen their claws on a wicker clothes hamper I picked up for free at a rummage sale a couple weeks ago.
