I received a pair of new e-mails from Queen of America Wednesday and Thursday, along with some commentary, all about the new fosters she received last week:
“This is a female. She’s shy but getting better. She loves Blackjack.

The orange boy and the black one are escape artists. The orange one made a run for it this morning and got as far as the front door screen. I put his little furry behind back in with the other where he proceeded to whine for a few minutes.
They all think Blackjack and Moosies’ tails are toys. The old boys are not amused."
I looked outside on the patio, and the hummer feeder was empty. It holds 4 cups and I filled it last week! Being on the Pacific Flyway means all the migrating hummers found me and the free lunch. Let’s see how long this one lasts.
I was starting to worry yesterday morning when it got to be after 11:00 and still no new strip. I was worried that something had happened to Graham. He’s one of our family and we don’t want anything happening to him.
But I had to get on with my day. I had things I needed to get done. I did a lot of weeding in my garden and I planted marigolds in front of my house. And I had a visit in the morning from a pest control company about getting squirrels out of the attic area of my back bedroom. I don’t want the critters killed, I just want them evicted. And these guys were recommended to me as people who would get rid of them in a humane way. It won’t be cheap, but I’ve got to get rid of the varmints. And now is a good time. If they have had babies in there, they should be weaned now and able to live on their own. That’s why I waited until late May to call these guys. Babies might be too young to survive on their own if I evicted them in April. Now I have to get rid of them before they produce another litter. I don’t know how many squirrels I actually have. I have only seen or heard one at any given time, but chances are he or she has a family.
I also contacted my regular carpenter about replacing a few windows in my house. I hope to do 4 windows this year – 2 in the kitchen, which let in lots of cold air and 2 in the front room which also let in lots of cold air. I’d like to also do my 2 bedroom windows upstairs, but after the money I have to spend on squirrel eradication, doing 2 more windows might not be in the budget. My carpenter will be here Saturday at noon so I can show him what I need done. I will need him to also fix the places where the squirrels are getting in. That also cuts into the budget, so my bedroom windows will probably have to wait until next year (lumber and building supply costs have gone through the roof. No pun intended). I might have enough money to do it this year, but I need to save some money in case another emergency pops up.
So was Chesney planning to cut it into 10 pieces to share??? Hahahahaha… Wednesday’s hike was just incredible as I had a wilderness trail and lake all to myself for a good 3 hours! No wind, clear sunny skies in the 40s, perfect for me. Birds singing everywhere, the Merlin app on my phone identified over 30 species by their song. Blissful. First hike without my dogs in years, but 3 miles would be tough for 12 year old Fred. By the time I got back down to my car I had passed more than a few dozen hikers and fishermen heading up, including one group playing rap on their phone! This is why I get up at 3 am to be on the trail by dawn.
I’m sure Oliver has a reasonable explanation. However, he can’t say it now because his mouth is full. On another note, saw two rabbits, four robins, a sparrow, and a chipmunk while out walking today.
