Life before cellphones. Note the ancient custom of people actually looking at each other. It’s eerie.

Why are all those people smiling? Uncle Fred’s not there, and the rest have made a vow not to talk about politics during Thanksgiving!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! to all my friends celebrating the holiday.

My version of famous save from “Joy of Cooking” Woman brings the turkey into the dining room with Thanksgiving crowd around the table and promptly drops it on the floor. She scoops it back onto the platter and says, “Just a minute, I’ll be right back with the other turkey”.

There is a Russian joke to that effect (unfortunately, the idioms don’t translate):

The waiter is bringing the chicken out to the diners when he drops it. He quickly puts it back on the serving tray, and checks to see if anybody saw – nobody did.

So he continues on. When he brings it to the table, one of the the diners asks “is the chicken fresh?”

“Oh, yes,” he replies, “It was just running”

I hate to break it to everyone who is so happy that the painting is not political, but it is political. It is called “Freedom from Want” and is one of Rockwell”s four paintings celebrating Franklin Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms“ speech. It was part of the propaganda supporting the war effort—a deeply political matter.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I’m glad my grandmother used to carve the turkey in the kitchen. One year she dropped her “falsie” into it. Until then, I didn’t think she could laugh, but the ladies were shrieking with laughter. :)

It’s the day after Thanksgiving so it’s now ok to tell the story behind the painting:

1- Grandma and Grandpa can no longer afford the meds they need to live.

2- Teenage boy has decided to experiment with opioids.

3- Attractive married woman is having multiple affairs.

4- Guy in the lower right corner is secretly gay but has worked up the courage to come out today to his disapproving strict bible interpretation family.

5- Turkey is loaded with antibiotics and full of insecticide from its feed and was raised in a 1 foot square pen.
