Psst, Tommy. Watch this twerp jump when I put a spider in his hand.
BTW, I am certain that is a young boy, not a girl. Times were different back then, and boys were often dressed in what today would be considered feminine clothing. Look up depictions of young boys in the 1800’s and before, and you maybe surprised.
This is the scene, some 70 years later, of the school days of Le Petit Nicolas, a gamin in stories written by Goscinny and hilariously illustrated by Sempé (a cartoonist I wish was at GC). Nicolas tells of his education in and out of class in the lower grades of an ancient institution. There’s a bully, a teacher’s pet, and pals who love to argue and fight. Their teacher is something like Miss Bliss in Cul de Sac, but the kids unwittingly reduce her to tears by day’s end, more often than not.

Queenie Hartz
Brought cherry tarts
For her Teatime snack.
.
The knave named Jim,
On wicked whim,
Grabbed one from her pack
.
Her brother, Louis
Thought it incongruous
Jim had those tarts, and beat him!
.
Thus Queenie Hartz
Got back her tarts
And humiliated was Jim.
