    My original post in 2019:

Posing for hours for this painting was hard enough on the models. What made it worse was listening to the artist repeatedly say:

Let’s see the Amerikaner Rockwell top this!

My original comment: Grandpa enjoys it when his grandson reads aloud the hay day parts of his journal.

A reading from “Tropic of Cancer”/

May well be a mood enhancer/

    But when it’s being read/

    Beside your deathbed/

    it probably isn’t the answer..

Based on Grandpa’s hand placement, I’d say the reading is having it’s intended effect

“The New Twilight Zone”, Season 2, Episode 3A: “The Storyteller” (1986)

Young Micah keeps his great-great-great-great-grandfather alive by making up stories night after night. The storylines must continue on without complete resolution, day after day, year after. A designated family member has been the Storyteller through generations. Micah’s father has died in a recent accident, and Micah is duty-bound to continue the role.

One female teacher takes interest in Micah’s obsessive notebook writing. And then the boy is injured on the playground and must spend overnight in the hospital …

Several years ago when Billy had the mumps, Gramps read him the story of The Princess Bride. Who knew that when the roles were reversed, Gramps would ask Billy to read to him from “Penthouse Letters”?

    Reading Devotions to Grandfather

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Grandfathers in art" Wikimedia

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Yandex search engines) in the browser address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and choose the first Category: found, and once there find the text string 1893, and click its link for info and links that point to more info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by merely clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s THROWBACK THURSDAY: MASTERPIECE #2252 (7/26/19) (March 6, 2024) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment. I have added a comment there pointing to the blog entry with my comment and replies pointing to info about this artist I used to point to here. So far, 17 works by him have been used here (21 times total, including this Throwback Thursday, and other repeats), the July 26, 2019, strip being its first use. The August 3, 2023, strip has the prior by him (another repeat).

I appear once again to have been banished. No idea why. If someone has decided to check my GoComics Profile Page and is reading this, please do not copy it to That Is Priceless, but in your own words let other readers know that I am posting to Steve’s blog (sometimes a day or two late) and hope to be reinstated here soon.

/// Joel was tasked to be Reading Devotions

to Grandfather; he goes through the motions.

    The old man barely stirs,

    still, his grandson prefers

this to daubing Gramps’ hemorrhoid lotions.

    Some comments from 7/26/19:

Call me Ishmael: The “Diaper of Despair” / at least protects the chair / but stay out of range / when it’s time for a change / and head for the open air !

Strob: “I think we should go with this Neptune Society plan.”

Papared25: Hank would have preferred that his wet-behind-the-ears doctor hadn’t had to read the manual before performing a proctology check.

juncarlo: “Grandpa, why do you want me to read you the “Fifty Shades of Grey” book? I’m not supposed to read it and you know it makes you nervous."

Buzzworld: “Read faster kid, I was 40 when you started this book”

ptnjbrown: Okay, I found the chapter on checking for testicular cancer … with pictures!?

PO’ DAWG: Reading page two of " 101 Knock Knock Jokes". Okay remember now Grandpa you say, " Who’s there?"

epaphus8: It was hard winter in their isolated cabin. Fearing they would have to resort to cannibalism to survive, Tommy passed the hours while waiting for Grandpa to die by reading the cookbook and dreaming of the recipes he would make. Then he reached the chapter on “assisting” the process …

pcolli: “But Grandad, you were supposed to be helping me with my homework.”

1234dick: WHAT: your only leaving me the chicken coop?

/// He was once, as an actor, quite big,

and best known for a pop movie gig.

    He, as Hoggett, a farmer,

    trained a curly-tailed charmer

to herd sheep. It was ”Babe,” a smart pig.
