I saw a few in Arizona. They and their cousins The Mexican Beaded Lizard are slow moving. The bite can be painful due to the venom but is rarely fatal. You are more in danger from the plentiful rattlesnakes, scorpions and venomous spiders.

No known cure for the bite of a Komodo dragon . When it bites, that part is gone!

The reason there is no anti-venom for a gila monster is that their venom is not toxic to humans. Being extremely reclusive, they will avoid contact with humans and only bite as a defensive measure when threatened. Those rare ones may be painful but pose no actual health risk.

My brother used to have a pet iguana that would sit on top of his old CRT computer displays. He called it his monitor lizard.
