"Will you please explain something to me?"
"Why is it that I need three forms of valid ID to rent a movie video..."
"But a total stranger can switch my long distance carrier without my knowledge?"
We have the same problem in the UK. Someone can arrange for your energy provider to be changed and once the process has started (which is when you get told about it), there is nothing you can do as the occupant to prevent it. And the anonymous person or company that arranged it gets a commission from the provider you have been switched to.
Then, when you try to switch back, you find you have to wait for a cooling off period before you can and when you have switched back, you are no longer in the special discount scheme you had previously managed to arrange and on the default high rate again.
What a marvellous piece of legislation that was. Almost as if they knew we were going to have massive price hikes and didn’t want us in our fixed rate, fixed term energy contracts.
