I lived in Italia for a couple of years and found I could get by with only (American) English. But then I lived near Napoli and worked at a NATO base and there was almost always someone that spoke enough English to help me get by. My landlord spoke better English than my Italian and I was extremely grateful for that, since I’m absolutely horrible at languages. I know lots of bits of four other languages but not enough to hold a conversation in any of them. One of my co-workers was conversational in five languages… you just gotta respect that kind of ability.
